Help

With engines now close to the absurd rating of 4000 I would like to find some engine with rating around 1700 to use for training games. An engine like Fritz can be "dumbed down", but that seems too artificial. I am looking for one (or more) that does its best and is at perhaps 1500 - 1800, free downloadable. Some old engines might be suited but are no more available for downloading.
Anyone has an idea?

@piranga

If you can find a copy, the ChessMaster series featured a chess engine that could be configured in a lot of ways. Not just strength, but also configured to play in different styles.
If is an old piece of software, so it can be a fight to get it to play on modern PCs and laptops.

I have an old Kasparov chess computer with lots of excellent features including many levels.I can usually beat it on level 1 but never above level 3(I think there's at least 5)
You may be able to find one on e bay or something.

@piranga
I had a sudden memory - when I was a little kid I remember playing against PSI Chess on the ZX Spectrum. It kicked my butt all the time, but it was probably about 1800 strength.
There are many ZX Spectrum emulators out there and I found PSI Chess files when did a search. Although I haven't tried running a ZX Spectrum emulator in a very long time.
But no doubt there will be youtube video explaining how to do it 🙂

Problem with "weak" chess engines is that they are differently weak than any weak chess player (chess players are also in different ways weak).
