    Here is a great example of an "attacking" move that doesn't quite work out 😛

    Dmitry Andreikin v David Guillen-Berna in 2001. Its nice to find the short games in the Ruy Lopez, you can sometimes get a sense of what is wrong with breaking the ridiculously complicated "book" 🙂

    A great game. Thanks for sharing. It is a variation of the attack that I have not seen before in exact form.

    EDIT: This will drive nimzo5 crazy, but if I had only seen the position at move 14, I would have thought "Wow, white has a great Colle-black must not have known what to play"... 😀

    Aw GP, you know Colle is the guy at the club you would have liked the most- he played even when he was sick, and he lived for the sacrificial attack.

    And the word "sound" was not in his vocabulary!

    EDIT: To make sure that this thread conforms to the pattern that the "Only Chess" forum seems to have adopted for 2012, I feel I need to disclose that, to the best of my knowledge, Edgard Colle was his real name, and no chess engines were used in the formulation of any of his games or moves.

    It's often dangerous for Black to throw his Q out on White's K-side early in an e4-e5 game after White has castled to that side.
    Here's a recent game of mine from the USCF that punishes Black for that sort of over-aggressive behavior:

    Invert BoardPGNHeaders

    Then, 8. c4 c6 9. Nc3 Nxc3 10. bxc3 Be7 11. cxd5 cxd5 12. Re1 O-O 13. Re5 g6 14. g3 Qf6
    15. Bg5 Qxg5 16. Rxg5 Bxg5 and Black resigned on move 26.
    ( could not get the pgn function to post a valid board past move 7! Tried for over 1/2 an hour. Can anyone do it? Anyone? ... Bueller?)

    I don't see why black resigns? He has bishop and rook for the queen, the two bishops, and he can maybe pick off that c3 pawn.

    The OP said that the game went on to move 26. We may need to see the rest of the moves.

    Paul, Thank you! That is exactly, (I think!) how I posted it and repeatedly got "Invalid pgn" on my preview screen. Truncating, I was able to get it to work thru 7 moves, but adding the 8. c4, etc always gave the error. I finally gave up and posted the moves to the Queen loss manually.
    Must be this Apple keyboard I'm stuck with! My Logitech ceased to function last week. I cannot understand how you got the same text that I tried previously to function!
    Does anyone really care to see the rest of the game? I admit he gave it up rather prematurely after 17. Qb3 Bc6 18. Bb5 Rfe8 19. Bxc6 bxc6 20. Qb7 Rec8 21. Re1 ,etc lost another Pawn for him.
    I'm playing Doug again in the '11 Golden Knights. There are not as many players as there used to be in the USCF CC as there were back in the '70's, so i keep seeing the same people. Now everyone is on these internet sites! As a USCF member, you should enter one yourself, Mr Leggett! Only $25 for a Golden Knights section that could last years! $10 for a Class section! Such a deal! I see that you used to play CC, but not at the present. I've always tried to promote the USCF, (they need the help), so don't take this in a bad way. (Although I could be in trouble with RHP for mentioning a rival! )

    I played backin the early 1990's for a bit. Back then my USCF OTB rating was about 1550 or so, and I was playing CC about 400 points higher when I got a new job and had to resign all my games while still provisional. It was fun, but I had started working 70 hours a week then and did not have the time. My chess playing has always been hit or miss due to work until I joined the site here.

    Dr. Errol Liebowitz was in my hometown back then, and he was a very strong CC Master and an OTB 2300 player, and he was a bit of a role model for a lot of us local players. I think he won the Golden Knights once, but I'm not sure.

    Exactly what happened with me. Work, (as a solo obstetrician 70 hr/wk would have been heaven), took all my time except for time with the family, and CC went bye-bye. But we in Pittsburgh had Hans Berliner as our role model. He was a member of the club. Inspired Max Zavanelli for certain, and me as well.
    Errol Liebowitz was an Absolute champ back in '84 and '86, not a Golden Knights champ. But then, that is much tougher to do.

    In the end I think he was too passive... not sure what would be better but maybe just giving up a pawn somehow to get activity instead of defending it without hope of retaining it. Perhaps 17... Rfd8 18. Qxb7 Rac8?

    If no one else wants to chip in, I would say that after Rfd8, Qxd5 would be better for White, not Qxb7. Then there is a double attack on the g5 B and the b7 Pawn.
    I think that Doug did play conservatively, but the board was favorable for my Queen to roam, and there's not much else he could do. He'd already been bit once being aggressive.

    If Qxd5 isn't ...Bf5 good? Like I said I'm not sure what is best for black but there's got to be something more active than ...Bc6, not necessarily aggressive.

    17... Rfd8 18.Qxd5 Bf5 19.Qf3 then I guess black is forced to trade bishops anyway?
