Welcome to the 11th round of the RHP Photography Competition! The subject of this round is "Humour". I know I am not the only one who struggled with the subject, but we got a nice selection in the end!

Comments and discussions are not only allowed, but encouraged right from the start. I would like everybody to say something about their favourite picture. Feel free to comment on other pictures as well. The names of the photographers will not be revealed until the voting is over.

Voting will close on Friday, 17 February, 20 UT. The discussion can and should be continued after that, of course. This round will be followed by:

Thanks Nordlys!

Having looked at them, I think its going to be just as difficult to judge as it was to find suitable subject matter!

I can't decide yet... but there seem to be three categories of entry:
Cute, Funny & Explained. Some are cute, and if that brings a smile to your lips, then maybe it could be humour. Some are funny on there own, while others need to be explained (in the description) before the humour is apparent.

To help me decide, I'm going to ask myself things like: Does the photograph works on it own? Does it depict humour? Is it appealing? And is it a good photo? I want to be sure I'm judging the photograph and not the commentary...

But still, it won't be easy. Hmmmm...

All I care is if the end product makes me laugh (or chuckle).

I can't decide yet either (and I am sure it won't take less than one hour until I can; more likely several days 😉). But I think I might categorize the entries a bit differently. I think I would categorize them in two different ways:

1. (Trying to be) funny on their own, and (trying to be) funny together with or because of the title and/or comment. The "trying to be" part is because I don't find all of the pictures funny, which can be because they aren't, or because it's a kind of humour I don't understand or appreciate. These two categories can also overlap, a picture may be somewhat funny on its own, but become even funnier together with the comment.

2. Type of humour. There are several categories here, including the "cute" category you mentioned. Another category which is represented several times here is "people doing supposedly funny things" (e.g. pulling a face). I seldom find those very funny. And then there are pictures which draw the humour from an unusual perspective and/or visual associations. I'd say that's the kind of humour I appreciate most in a photograph because it's visual humour in its purest form.

While I won't vote yet, I already have a very clear favourite. It's a perfect example of a picture which works without a comment and draws the humour from an unusual perspective. I am talking about "Duck Turbulence", which I think is just brilliant. It would fit right into a book with optical illusions. It looks sooo photoshopped, and yet it isn't... I just love those ducks swimming in the sky.

1st - 10 pts - 6. It's no trouble really (for the phrase: "The ancient building is renovating".)
2nd - 8 pts - 11. Decorated Heads (One of the children really looks like something has been poured over his/her head.)
3rd - 6 pts - 13. Size Matters (I like dogs doing crazy stuff.)
4th - 5 pts - 8. Floppy (Looks like he's trying to balance himself; had a few drinks maybe?)
5th - 4 pts - 3. Catch if you can (I like dogs doing crazy stuff.)
6th - 3 pts - 10. Nature's Call (Need I articulate it?)
7th - 2 pts - 9. Genetic Mutations (I like dogs doing crazy stuff. Even genetically altered ones.)
8th - 1 pt - 17. Undergrowth (More interesting than funny, but I had to give a point for that.)

Sleeping beauty because its very subtle, and you have to get in touch with your evil side to really appreciate it's humour. I like my evil side. 😀 Well composed shot, as per most of the black and white shots we've had so far. 😉

Little man, partly because he reminds me of a kid I met called Jefferson who used to sell peanuts all through in night outside a bar in Salvador de Bahia. Little man has the same innocent, benevolent expression as Jefferson. I actually had this rated much higher, until I remember this was the humour round. It definately made me smile though, so it's just behind the ones that were more of a humourous smile than a fond remembrance/cute smile. The suit and tie and stance really add to the humour of the shot. I wonder if he knows who Sammy Davis Jr is?

Duck Turbulence. Made me smile and be confused at the same time. I liked it.

Feigning death is great. You can see that it is obviously a wedding at a critical time with the father about to give away the bride when the adults daren't break a smile. Then the kid suddenly gets bored, and he couldn't have timed it better. The expressions on the faces of the adults does it for me along with the guy in the left bottom corner quietly beckoning. Only pic to make me actually giggle, but it didn't win as technically, I think Sleeping Beauty is much better. I'd still definately hang it up in my home if I had taken it though. 😀

Its no trouble really. Its funny because it is true. Well composed shot again, with good depth of field.

Anthem got in there by the skin of its teeth. Really just for the quality of the pic.

I agree. When I was writing my comments, I actually wrote "its a great use of manipulation, no matter how simple", then I realised that there was no manipulation involved at all: just a simple rotate.

I had to open it on my own pc and invert it to make sure that it hadn't actually been touched up, because, as you say, it gives you the impression of being stonewalled photoshopped.

For some reason, the ripples are much more visible when the pic is the proper way around. Maybe its just because they are more expected there, so you see them easier?

I wonder if the photographer actually had the inversion in mind when composing the pic, or whether it was fluked. 😉 Either way, its great.

Me too. 🙂 I don't see the ripples less, but there are clouds which look that way. What really baffled me were the ducks, which look so totally upside up. 😉

Thank you Nordlys for all the work you are doing for us! You deserve a price as well!

It was a rather difficult subject to bring in good pictures, but there were a few very good ones.

1. Duck Turbulence
2. To the left you see
3. Nature's call
4. Decorated heads

The special effect in Duck Turbulence is very well done and the result is very funny. It could be a picture of Escher.

It's especially the gull on the high pole that makes in funny. It seems like it is the guide of the group.

I don't think that "Nature's Call" needs any explanation.

Decorated heads is funny because there are only gulls on the heads, it's like the people in the statue are all wearing the same hat.

There is no special effect, the picture has just been turned upside down.

1st - 10 pts - To the left, you see.. (Immediately appealing shot...)
2nd - 8 pts - Anthem by Antonín (Nice macro shot)
3rd - 6 pts - Feigning Death (its the authorative call/embarassment of the adult at the side that makes it work for me)
4th - 5 pts - Floppy (Dogs are endlessly entertaining- and this a particularly good small dog/small action shot)
5th - 4 pts - Size Matters (Dogs are endlessly entertaining)
6th - 3 pts - Catch it if you can (Dog, bucket, head.. of course its funny!)
7th - 2 pts - Wild Animals (Interesting - perhaps it may have been served without the text overlay)
8th - 1 pt - Little Man (Not entirely sure if it fits the humour context.. but it is a great shot, that is full of personality
