Here it is - the 13th round of the RHP Photography Competition, "Still Life"! It seems that most of us had a lot of fun taking the pictures for this round, and hopefully that also shows in the pictures.

Please don't vote for your own entries. Voting is obligatory for everybody who has entered this round, and it would be much appreciated if everybody who plans to enter future rounds would vote in this round as well. And of course any other votes are very welcome, too!
Comments and discussions are not only allowed, but encouraged right from the start. I would like everybody to say something about their favourite picture. Feel free to comment on other pictures as well. The names of the photographers will not be revealed until the voting is over.
Voting will close on Sunday, 7 May, 20 UT. The discussion can and should be continued after that, of course. This round will be followed by:
14. Extended Exposure
15. Movement/Motion
16. Home (can be in your home, or just in the locality that you would regard as home)
17. Words
18. Advanced Editing
More to come.

Enjoy!
Oh, by the way, the promised non-voting section doesn't exist at the moment because I didn't get any entries for it. I am still willing to create it if anyone is interested, or possibly even if nobody else is interested, as I have at least two pictures I might want to enter for it myself. So feel free to enter something for that section during the next few days.
Once again I'll get mine in early. This way I can avoid any tactical voting later on!
Congratulations to all the entrants - A great standard of work. A lot of love has gone into this round.
1st - 10pts - 25 Remotes - It's the lighting and the contrast. Makes you want to reach out and switch on. Electronic fruit. Brilliant.
2nd - 8pts - 4 Balance - Love this shot, beautifully composed, wonderfully incongruous. May have got my top spot, but for the pepper cliche!
3rd - 6pts - 14 Harmonic Light - Stunning light effects. May have scored higher if the picture was larger. 400x600 is a little small to be fairly judged. Reflection on the polished wooden surface is super.
4th - 5pts - 29 Pressure - Stunning. But is there life in that egg? Seriously, very interesting background colour compliments the subject.
5th - 4pts - 23 Printer Paper - I like the idea of printer paper curled like tulips. In this case, though, a more interesting background may have helped.
6th - 3pts - 13 Guarding the Last Leaf - The colours work better than the composition, but the concept is very clever, and the end result highly effective.
7th - 2pts - 11 Geomegg - Very eye catching, and very effective reflection and shadow.
8th - 1pt - 5 Books - I like books, so have an affinity for the subject. An effective B&W with excellent depth. My only criticism is that a book wouldn't normally appear that way unless it was moving. Still Life?
I also particularly liked Cup of Tea, Kinders Klux Kollection, Soroban on the Rocks, To the Point and Auto Orgy. But the standard here is so high, there has to be losers, and excellent ones at that.

Just a few quick comments. I'll give my thoughts on some of the others tomorrow when I have more time.
9. Early Morning Fruit - I think shots of fruit need to be done in more white light, to really capture the colours of the fruit. Done in the early morning light, everything seems to take on an orangey hue.
10. Faded Flower - Very nice, but it bothers me that it seems to be over exposed. The vase becomes absorbed by the harsh bright light. If I were to do that shot, I'd either make the vase completely invisible, or have it shown in its entirety. Maybe I don't get the style it is taken in, but I don't really like the fact that the tips of the petals and the stem are out of focus. The drooping flower is a great subject for still life though, IMO.
12. Granddad's Auction - The unnatural light beams ruin it for me. I think it could have been great without them, as they seem to obscure a lot of the detail of the objects, especially the knives (? )
13. Guarding the Last Leaf - Love this shot, but the leaf doesn't seem a natural light, and I might have preferred it if the second guardian was more in focus.
20. In An Art Gallery - Great concept, but possibly a little too busy for me. I still can't decide whether I love this one, or just like it. Needs more time. There doesn't seem to be a focal point, but that's because there are items of interest everywhere. I can't figure out why my mind is telling me that a lack of focal point in that case is a negative. 😉
22. Peppers - Again a very nice concept, contrasting the roughness and dullness of the wood, with the smoothness and colour of the peppers. Again, I'd prefer to see the objects (the wood and the dark pepper) more in focus.
27. Vegetable Soup - Great photo and great light. The colours and textures of the vegetables are really well captured. Everything seems to be in focus.
29. Pressure - Lovely picture. I was thinking of doing a couple of egg shots as well, but never got around to it. The egg and the vice-grips are a great combo. I think the photo could be improved with a more contrasting background though. As it is, the colour of the objects is de-emphasised (word? ), especially the rust on the vicegrips, which would really stand out if the background wasn't the same colour the rust. [EDIT] See 4. Balance for what I mean. The yellow of the pepper is really highlighted by the greyness of the mechanical object and the background.
Deciding my votes and giving some more feedback will be a very enjoyable couple of hours tomorrow. 🙂
