I am sick of wallowing in the 1800s, and want to try to get to 2000+ in CC over the next few months.

I have invested in some chesslectures tutorial videos, and am looking for book recommendations.

I have read The Art of Attack in Chess. I own Fundamental Chess Endings and the MCO. I rarely use the latter two. I am purchasing some books on my favourite openings, so that I know what I should hope to achieve out of the opening (rather than feeling slightly stranded at times, if I just use a database), and am willing to spend some time on improving my strategy, planning, endgame and tactics by reading some books.

Now, what I need from you is some book recommendations. I like Vukovic's book, and am also enjoying reading through Dvoretsky's "School of Excellence 3: Strategic Play", due to them being quite wordy without piles of lines (like FCE).

Thanks for your time,

D

I recommend "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway.

How many games do you play at once?

How much time do you spend on each move average?

Do you use a database?

IRC there is a getting to 2000 at CC and speedchess. The difference with getting to 2000 at speedchess is that you cannot carry your databases/books and so you have to learn your stuff.

What is wrong with the books you already have? Have you digested what's in there? It's not the amount or variety of books its doing what's in there that counts.

I agree. Having a lot of chess books does not mean that you will improve (ie: me)

Thanks for the chess.fm tip and the book rec.

I should have probably titled this thread slightly differently. All I'm looking for here are book recommendations.

Thanks,

D

Exactly even if you had GK as a guest in your house and you could "see combinations that Fritz couldn't" ahem ... you still need to do what's in the book.

Well If you want to get to 2000, I suggest dropping your games from 15 to maybe 8 or so and spend more time on each move and use a database. That helps a lot.

Books:

Reasses your Chess - Silman

Chess: the art of Logical Thinking - Neil ____. It's on my blog. It's like logical chess move by move but with new GMs. Anand, Kasp, Top. etc...

I suggest you also get a specific opening book. I hate reading them but that should help you. Get one for the white opening you play and you should be set.

Mark Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual is exceptional. If i wasn't so damned lazy i'd be an end game master by now as it is comprehensive and lucid, possibly the best chess book i've ever claimed to read. It is perfect for your level. I might recommend that, should you buy this book, you by it on CD as you can read it in chessbase (or fritz or any other CB product). I read three chapters in a sitting, something i've never managed with a book and board...
