I've wimped-out on occasion by playing 2...c6 (turning the BDG into a Caro-Kann) or by playing 2...e6 (transposing into a French Defense).
Since I enjoy playing gambits these days (even with Black!), I've toyed with one of Eric Schiller's recommendations: 2...c5(!??!). Black is basically playing the White side of an Albin Counter Gambit (1 d4 d5 2 c4 e5) a move down.
I've only played it a few times in blitz, but it seems to work no better or worse than anything else I've played against the BDG.
I enjoy playing the Scandinavian Defense, especially when I can unleash the lethal(?) Portugese Gambit: 1 e4 d5 2 ed Nf6 3 d4 Bg4!?
I've won and lost brilliantly (LOL) with this variation. (Refer to MCO-14 to see the main line.)
GM John Nunn, I think it was, once wrote that if God played God in the Modern Benoni that White would win, but it offers Black good practical chances at lower levels.
we did play it and you played 2. ...g6 or something like that.
one problem I find for pure 1. d4 players when using the BDG is that after 2. e4, and black responds with 2. ...c6 and 2. ...e6, then you're stuck playing the Caro-Kann or the French (respectively) which are 1. e4 openings for which a 1.d4 player lacks knowledge of.
I personally don't have this problem as I am a 1. e4 player and only use the BDG via 1. e4 d5 2. d4 so transposition to the Caro-Kann and French aren't a problem for me.
