try 1.f4 instead, it probably also takes the opponent out of book. even 1.c4 does for the great majority of amateurs. in OTB, the grob might have the surprise effect but also because it's OTB, it's too risky if you aren't experienced.

I know I've mentioned this a million times (give or take), but the only time that I ever took clear first in a Chess Palace Blitz Tournament was the time that I played 1 g4 in every game as White, and 1...g5 ( or 1...h6 2...g5) in all of my games with Black.

I highly recommend "The Killer Grob" by IM Michael Basman.

I think that Basman gave up the Grob for the Creepy Crawly (1...a6 2...h6), an opening which he wrote a booklet about.

Also, try Stefan Bücker's column at www.chesscafe.com, which had some good Grob coverage recently.

Somewhere around a year and ahlf ago, Dragon Fire swore that he had figured out a way to get to 2000, and that he would tell everyone after he had proved his system. One of the things he did during the time it took him to reach 2000 was play the grob a lot. He posted a thread about the greatness of the Grob even. I couldn't find that thread but this one is part of that discussion, and I'd say that you could do a lot worse than ask Dragon Fire about the Grob - Thread 52484
