Folks, you don't have much time left to join the 2009 Championship Tournament.

I've been reminding people who are regulars/ memorable presences to enter - if you're browsing the forums - this means you.

I want to briefly give my counter to some of the excuses I've heard.

Excuse #1 - Engines cheat and win that every year.
If you're good enough to go deep into the tournament - you should be good enough to compete with an engine. Sure there are cheaters and that sucks - no doubt. The greater the challenge, the greater the triumph.

Excuse #2 - Too many games on my plate already.
This is somewhat legitimate - 18 additional games is a significant jump. The Championship is only once a year though....

Excuse #3 - I'm not good enough.
No kidding! Me neither! But I do love to compete and occasionally you can put yourself in a position to do great things. I've beat players 200-300 better than my rating and lost to players 200-300 worse than me. I don't have delusions of winning but I'll make as big a dent as I can.

The bottom line is - while you're alive, live.

Hope to see everyone who posts regularly in the tourney.

Great motivational speech! 🙂

My excuse is that I like to take my time with my moves and the constantly running clock is a pressure I don't really like in CC. I'm also hoping to go on vacation in February.

Maybe you're right though. Maybe I'll join. I still have a day or 2 to decide though.

I'm going to destroy you all, and especially the engines

I was one of the folk you contacted and I did not give you an excuse - I gave you a reason
I have consistently refused to join any tournament once I see an engine user has entered.
I will continue to boycott tournaments that engine users enter.
If you choose to quote me please get it right.

How can you be sure that they are engine users? Wouldn't they be banned from the site already if they were using software?

it takes time for a person to get banned...plenty go un-caught...but lets cut this debate short before someone names somebody else and this thread gets shut down

Some other posters here have summed it up already.

Just look at the final of the 2008 tournament and the farce of 2007 when cludi won, was banned and it was awarded to English Tal who has now been banned.

Looking through the list of entrants for 2009 I can already see at least 4 engines who will likely make the last 10 and will then probably get themselves banned spoiling it for the rest of us.

I don't really expect that I could win this tournament but it would be nice to think I wasn't playing Fritz in every second game.

Uhhh....actually your name was not used in my original post.....therefore you weren't quoted.....

I'll be polite and leave it at that.

I accept that I was not quoted by name, however, you inferred that it was an excuse which it was not but it was a reason and there is a difference.

I am gonna enter the final round. I am gonna crush U ! With brainZ alone ! Yeah. That's my new year decision. I will devote my life to it. I will sleep for 8 hours, learn chess 8, and think 2 hours and 40 minutes about EACH move.

I understand and accept that the words "excuse" and "reason" have different definitions and connotations. In this case, I can assure you that the usual negative connotations of the word "excuse" were not intended or aimed at you.

I'm sure if I had written 10 "old timers" here, probably half would have said "No thanks - too many engines." It's a valid reason - I just hope too many people won't use it.

i qualify as an old-timer, and wouldn't use this "engine" excuse.
cheers,

Call me naive, but I don't understand why other players using an engine would deter anyone from entering. If you lose to an engine then you lose and you learn. It can only make you a better player. The player who won can feel no satisfaction seeing as they didn't play the game themselves. If you win, then, well, you won. And we all know winning feels good... 😀
