Probably because there is a little more to chess than just counting material.
You should ask them to teach you the rest 😉

ps: when you know all there is to know, can you teach me?Please?😀

I've seen somewhere that a bishop is worth 3 1/5. Is this correct? And how do they work out such values?

Well, I thought that one bishop is 3, and that two bishops are 7, so 3+3=7!😀

I have a couple of books that both say that a bishop is worth 3 or 3+ depending on position. Another book says that pawn=1, knight=3, bishop=3.5, rook=5, and queen=9. Unfortunately, they all refuse to rate the king. The way I play sometimes, you'd think he was worth 0. 😳

Knights and bishops are worth alittle more than 3,maybe 3.5,but not always. It depends on the position. So,to make it easy we rate them 3.Same goes for the other pieces. The king isn't rated 'cause he usually is useless in the opening and middlegame and you can't afford to lose him. However,he's very powerfull in the endgame.Personally,I don't agree with this approach. He can capture pieces,so he has combatvalue. In my opinion he deserves at least 3 points and increasing near the endgame 😏

Very good point! Perhaps an extra point for every three or four pieces that die?

Heyheyhey! Don't make it to difficult for me when I decide to trade my king for some pieces, is it 3 or 4? Or 3,5? Or...whatever, I need some sleep...😕

Olav

p.s. It's maths homework...I just don't get it...😕

I've just finished a match where I gave up 3 pieces for my opponents queen in a game filled with sacrifices.

Apart from missing the exchange by one move I think it's probably my best game since I returned to playing chess.
