Looked at the game. (although this game will play a minor part it kicked off an
idea so the next blog is sorted - Thank You.)

In the game itself ...Let's have a look.

patrickrutgers stop thinking of checks as cheques and cashing them in right away.
    Think Dive Bombers!

...[text shortened]... ll pick the f8 Rook only this time you keep
Mr Magnificent on the board. The b2 Bishop.
Thanks, greenpawn. Points well taken. In gratitude and respect, I have endeavored to learn how to post a fen thingy. I have failed.

In that second example, (here goes):
I saw the Kg7 preventing the mate so decided to go for what seemed like a certain piece advantage instead of a chance at mate that relied upon my opponent missing something. I think it seemed to me if my opponent saw the b2 bishop hiding behind a knight on f6 and played Kg7, I could still capture the f8 rook but then would lose the knight on the next move. With what I did, I got the rook without a loss.

(Ok, I just copy-and-pasted the fen from your post. Can't figure out how to change anything or to make a board with movable pieces other than with a pgn from a played game. Just know I tried.)

I have a hard time keeping those cheques in the bank because when learning the noble game from my father (who as it happens was an accountant) he had a way of capitalizing on my hesitation. Whenever I tried to keep a threat in reserve, he'd mate me while I was still building the perfect opportunity to mate him. So I
"learned" to take whatever I get as soon as I can get it and try to build off that advantage later. I think the reality is I was just learning and he was simply a lot better than me (with a potentially destructive pedagogic style) but the lesson "He who hesitates is lost" has been hard to shake.

    Hi Patrick

I did say before the 2nd example; "This one is trifling but for the record..."

You go two pieces up either way.
....in my line you have the two Bishops so you must win!! 😉

I have scoured through all my games and haven't found a 5-piece mate yet, but noone can argue about these 4-PIECE mates 😉

In effect this is five pieces, because both the wK and the wRf1 guard f3 and f4.
