And I needed a leg up. Asked Yashin which square was ?xR mate on
so I could do it in my head as I got caught once to often at work messing
about my pocket set at my desk.
Did not fancy sitting there in a think if I'm on the wrong track.
Before the clue I thought I had it here.
1. c4 b5 2. cxb5 Nc6 3. bxc6 Bb7 4. cxb7 d5 5. Qa4+ Qd7 6. bxa8=R {But SG would never be that untidy as to leave in a dual solution - the fourth Black move can be either 4....d5 or 4...d6. So I tidied it up. See next try.}
1. c4 d5 2. cxd5 Nc6 3. dxc6 b6 4. Qa4 Bb7 5. cxb7+ Qd7 6. bxa8=R {Only one sequance of moves can produce that. Sent to SG back comes it's a piece on a8 that moves to capture a Rook giving mate. Huh!}
Back to drawing board.
I like this try. The Rook follows the Queen about saying 'Take me - Take me'
1. e4 h5 2. Qxh5 d5 3. Qxd5 Rh5 4. Qxb7 Rd5 5. Qxa8 Kd7 6. Qxd5+ {But that is my six moves and I'm one move short - need Black to play Qe8 for it to be mate.}
and here...
1. e3 Na6 2. Qf3 Rb8 3. Qxb7 d6 4. Qa8 Be6 5. Bb5+ Qd7 6. Qxb8+ {You have to imagine a6 Knight not being there and it's mate!...sadly it is and it's another fail.}
...and here...
1. e3 h5 2. Qf3 Rh6 3. Qxb7 Rc6 4. Qxa8 d5 5. Bb5 Kd7 6. Qxc6+ {Again that poxy Knight is stopping me.}
Got it with the clue.
You should have a bash at these things. Very enjoyable though they
can hook you (and get you into trouble).
It was first posted 9 days ago. Try it.
(if you need a clue...I'll leave that up to SG to give 6.?a8 x R?? mate
and the mating square perhaps as a
Reveal Hidden Contenthidden message
I got fairly soon after knowing which square ?a8 went to mate.)
Good.
