Well, that is the reason your opponent plays 1.d4. He doesn't like crazy games with kings running for their lives to the center of the board and there is pretty much nothing you can do as Black. You just complete the development, make sure your light-square bishop is not locked and you'll create attacking possibilities - if possible - later on. I prefer to play a Slav with an early a6 (like 4...a6), the advantage being that it's quite easy to learn and play. No long, tricky lines like in the Sicilian.
