Some people seem to regard not losing a game as "suspicious" however there is a precedent.

ICCF Correspondence GM Erik Bang (DEN) was unbeaten in correspondence games for 20 years between the mid 1970's and the mid 1990's. He was a strong OTB player as he won the 1963 Junior Championship of Denmark, but even so this CC record is remarkable.

If you want to see some games that Weyerstrass has lost then go to www.iccf-webchess.com and put in Weyerstrass and you can see some.

You honestly think no one has checked him yet?

Also, he is a C.C specialist with a reputation, not some dude who played 50 games in the last month & raced to the top slot with a ratings graph like the North face of the Eiger.

The easiest way is to click on "rating list" on the left hand side, put in weyerstrass and then click his iccf number (in blue) which then list events he has played in. Click an event then the crosstable comes up and you can click on the results to see the games.

I think it's perfectly natural to reflect on how some players perform much better in correspondence chess than over the board, and on sites like this one and gameknot than in International Correspondence Chess Federation tournaments. Can you imagine the shock if Weyerstrass lost in twelve moves to someone here!

I find the fact that some players play well above themselves when they don't have to rush their moves very interesting. Personally I'm pretty sure that I would come up with the same plan after two hours thought than after two minutes 95% of the time and the only difference between my OTB play and my play here is the number of simple blunders I catch with the extra time to think. However it seems that some very average over the board players can genuinely play at close to GM standard when they don't have to worry about the clock.

Agree. I recently had a postal game against a long time master so I know his rating is legit. But he’s only mid-1800’s OTB. Back before computers, with the exception of Hans Berliner who was rated 2400+ OTB, most of the US leading CC players were rated about 2300 OTB. I don’t think CJS Purdy was ever rated above that but he still won the world CC Champ. Back before chess was really popular, the internet and engines, a few players good enough to have played in the US champ. tried their hand at CC but never did exceptionally well. A list of world CC champions shows Ragosin and O’Kelly as the only OTB GM’s, but I’m not sure how many other GM’s participated in these events. These days it’s hard to tell because so many top players use engines to “check” their moves. I’ve heard this termed “ethical cheating.” The only OTB rating I could fine for the current US CC Champ is a little over 1800. That said, looking at his analysis he seems to be a much better player than that because his analysis is not just a lot of computer generated lines, but is a well verbalized description of what is going on in the game.
