Hi, I am not really a beginner anymore at chess. I have an understanding of tactics and positioning, middle and endgames and I am well suited with black, but I have problems winning with white.
What advice can some of you advanced players give me on playing with white? how should I develop my pieces? What openings are more agressive?
I don't want to play closed games!
Would you advise that the KIA is a good thing for me to learn in order to improve my attacking skills with white? Or is there something else you would reccomend?
While I agree with Smaug about the merits of the Ruy Lopez, unless you are going to play the Exchange Variation, there is soooooo much theory to learn to cover all of black's responses.
I prefer to try and play something a little different, Scotch Game for instance. Decent amount of information to learn, but not like the lods of the Ruy Lopez. Maybe even think of playing the Giouco Piano (sp?). Some fun games come out of 3. Bc4.
One of the most important things if you play e4 is how you will respond to the Sicilian. I used to play a ton of over the board tournaments, and can only ever remember a couple of times that I actually got to play a Ruy Lopez. e5 was always followed up with d6 or Nf6, hardly ever Nc6. I still don't have this figured out, though I am just trying to get back into it after quite a few years away. Maybe learn the Closed Sicilian so that you can keep your time geared towards end games and middle games.
Edit: Closed Sicilian gives you ample opportunities to attack, don't let the name fool you...

Originally posted by BillyVoltaireThanks for the advice. I don't look forward to playing against the sicilian and NC3 looks like a solid move.

I have played the scotch game before, it seems pretty fun!

That is true.. There is alot of theory to learn. It does cover ECO codes C60-C99. 😲 .
But time taken to become familiar with the Ruy Lopez is time well spent I say.
Yeah, against e5, I play something simpler which limits black's responses. Here is how I handle it: 1. e4 e5 2. d4 exd (d6 or any other move is really bad) 3. Nf3 and it then transposes into the Scotch game 95% of the time. The other 5% transpose into poor lines for Black. I choose this opening because I always get what I want against e5.
