Best way to get help is to post one of your games and get people to analyse. Here is one game I have found of yours:
Game 2642034
First glance 2. f3 was a bad move, exposes your king side and stops your knight from developing to a good square. You then moved the knight to the edge of the board, which generally isn't good. You did the same with the other knight but your opponent blundered away his bishop anyway.
You also spent a lot of moves passively pushing pawns when you should have developed your other pieces. Your opponent blundered a lot as well though which meant you had a won game at the end, but you missed the opportunity.
Game 2512872
Game 2720113- moved wrong piece towards end and lost the rook, all downhill from there
Game 2659124- just didn't see the checkmate coming.
Game 2651110
Game 2604987
I found that reading the book"Bobby Fisher Teaches Chess" to be what stated me on the road to being better. I found it to be an easy read and educational. There are also chess toutorials you can do that teach the basics to beginner chess. I like interactive learning so the tools mentioned are in that mode. Have fun and also don't get too serious. Good luck😀:
Bobby Fischer teaches chess is a bit biased imo (and also according to Kasparov) an example is that he blatantly states that a Knight is worth 3 pawns and and that a Bishop is worth 3.25 pawns (he always favored bishops over knights, particularly the light squared bish)
I would recommend Silman's "How to Reassess your Chess" along with a good book of tactics.
where's those darned getting to 1400 and 1600 threads?

Originally posted by muleoWell, I'm no expert in chess, but I find that reading books and studying masters' games can help a lot. But you shouldn't be too ambitious in the beginning. Take one step at a time. Learn the openings, middle games, endgames step by step. Don't expect to become 2000 overnight, because that's not going to happen.
If anyone out there has the time and inclination, I would really appreaciate some pointers on how to improve my game. Only just started playing recently, cheers.
A word on studying masters' games. I would recommend studying modern GMs' games. I guess you can also have a look at evergreen oldies, but perhaps good to refrain from the older games. I find that quite a number of the old games are without doubt very exciting and aggressive and can cast a spell on a beginner. But some of these games are just bad examples, eg early queen sorties; improper developments etc. Quite often the olden days masters won the games in a very fascinating way. But I doubt that such an approach can work against a modern GM.
I've come across quite a number of chess beginners who have seen some of these old games and immediately getting influenced by them. And so they tend to bring out their queen early. For example, they bring out the bishop and queen and expect to mate on the f7 square. That hardly works these days, at least not against a reasonably good player.
The other comment is on playing attitude. Try to resist impulsive moves. Always ask yourself "why did my opponent make that last move?"
Originally posted by cmsMasterCompletely agree. That long Sicilian thread might be a good choice, there have been a couple lengthy discussions on the English, etc...we need to be able to sticky threads.

Muelo - for one thing, I would not personally play phildors defence(1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6), it is an inferior choice. 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 is better! This means you will face the ruy lopez, but don't worry, it is something we all have to face sooner or later.
I know that I have no problem playing against phildors defence and rarely lose to it.
