Originally posted by metalshredder I think one idea that might work against the french is the line I'm working on at the moment. It is known as Nimzowitsch's Gambit
1. e4 e6
2. d4 d5
3. e5 c5
4. Qg4!?
It's really cool but needs preparation for white along with understanding of the ideas.
Ok? So it's a gambit then? After cxd4 you don't retake? I guess I miss the point.

Blacks kingside is weak in the french and white hopes to exploit that. It is rather premature in this case. A slightly better line is the "blitz" variation of the winawer
1. e4 e6
2. d4 d5
3. Nc3 Bb4
4. Qg4
but of course many french players will play 3. Nf6 into a classical line.

Dunno why, just seems a very natural way to put long term pressure on black in the FD.
1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 is good sysdtem, but I` have played this system and concluded that it isnt for me. 2.d3 or 2.Qe2 suits me much better.

it was mate if he took the rook like in 6-8 moves. re1+ his king ends up on a6 with my queen on a4! I saw the move Nxh7 after I took his knight, (too busy going through the lines of sacking my knight) and didn't bother going through the line.

Not trying to rain on your parade, so to speak, but I ran that position from 19. Re6 thru J10 and S10 and they both snap off the rook and claim a material advantage for Black... of course engines can defend like iron and find the best, most careful moves in that dangerous situation-- something hard to do for a human who is demoralized by their position, tired of being on the defensive, and possibly under time pressure.
It's an interesting position to study from both sides off the board -- and I would have sac'd and chased the king myself!
Congrats on your win, btw; it seems you tore your opponent down with those sacs and with him knowing he faced a grim, defensive task for the next several moves!

I not sure I follow you here, I lost the game, but did have winning chances.
you could be right, I know that there is a forced mate or winning material in that line, the longest line is like 20 ply or 10 moves, maybe your engine isn't powerful enough, with so many moves it's hard to figure out, I'll have someone with fritz 10 run it and see what it says!
