I don't think white has chances of more than a draw in the 7.d5 line if black plays it correctly, for example in the line you gave 10.Bd7 is a mistake, blocking the check with the knight is much better although less forcing.

It's fun looking at some of the variations but the Traxler makes my brain hurt if I look too long.

According to traxler himself, he believes that this opening is actually objectively sound. As sharp as it is, he believes that if perfectly played by both players the game will be a draw.

what about 9. d5! instead of 9. c3?

I assume you mean 9.d6, I think both moves are equally good, and if both players play correctly the games should be drawn.It's my impression that d6 is a bit more tricky it gives black more chances to go wrong but he can still get a draw and if white slips a win. After 9.d6 i believe cxd6 is the correct move, a plausible continuation is 10.c3 Bg4 11Qa4+ Kf8 (only move) 12cxd4(every other move looses from white) 12exd4 and white can't stop a draw by repetition.
