My question es were my moves 8 and 9 bad? The guy I was playing mocked me, told me I lost the initiative by doing so. When I told him it was to stop him from castling he told me that it wasn't important after trading queens. When I told him I didn't think so at the time (obviously -- otherwise I wouldn't have traded) he proceeded to tell me that he was a 2000 rated player and that I wasn't and laughed at my moves there on out. While I suppose he has a point, it sort of rubbed me the wrong way. Bad move on my part?

You won the bloody game! Don't listen to a prat like that.

Edit: you should be able to judge for yourself that he doesn't know what he is talking about. The queens aren't everything you can attack the king in the middle just as easily without queens. Besides, that move keeps the initiative if anything and gives you an extra useful tempo while he just wasted time recapturing the queen with his king.

Edit2: not to mention that his king is stuck in the middle and you have the open e-file to boot. I think he knew it was a bad idea to let you make that trade and he was just trying to rattle you into messing up.

e5 wasn't the best but he should have played 8...Qc7! Instead other than that I don't see anything particularly bad.

I'll admit that he played this game a lot better than a 1300 rated player...

Tom-Tom's analysis is spot on, enemy King in the middle of the board, etc. Plus he is playing a piece down with the King blocking in the h8 rook while yours are active and on open files.

At one point your opponent was rated 1960, but he has pages of time-outs. Maybe he's a Longhorn or Red Raider?

Look at his rating graph, he was a 1950+ at one point. He was a 1750 when I played this game against him...

He is clearly not a 1300.
Regarding the game posted by amlov06
Not being able to castle is typically less important w/o queens on board since the opponent has fewer attacking chances. However he didn't allow himself enough space to be able to play Kd/e7 connecting the rooks. Well played.
