Grandmaster Robert Fischer once wrote in his Bestseller book "My Sixty Memorable Games" that the first move 1.e2-e4 was "Best by test". Once this move is made, the reply from your opponent may dictate the opening to follow such the Ruy Lopez, French Defense, Sicilian Defense, etc.
I suggest you to try an opening you like the most and thoroughly study it with all its variations.

It depends on what kind of game you like to play. If you prefer an open game, 1.e4 may be best. Its main drawback is that some lines are very sharp and one opening slip can cost the entire game. the other main moves such as 1.d4, 1.c4, and 1.Nf3 generally lead to more "positional" and maneuvering games, where if an inaccurate move is made in the opening it is not generally cause for alarm.
