If so it will be VERY out-of-date.

"Play the french" 3edn was published in 2003 by comparison.
The one I just ordered on Amazon is dated 2003:

I like 1. e5 as my response to 1. e4. French and Caro Kann are to boring for me and envolve to much theory, and e5 has many many options depending on what white does. Keep's things fresh.

It's usually unexpected by the opponent.

If white doesn't play 2. exd5, loses space in center.

If the game continues 2. exd5 Qxd5, I would have developed my queen much too early. Against a strong opponent, that's a bit of trouble.
I used to play the Nf6 Scandinavian (1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Nf6) extensively as black. It can lead to spectacular tactics early on against unwary opponents, but against a well-prepared opponent black does struggle for equality. I feel it is a good choice in fast OTB games but probably not really that well suited to correspondence games.

    Cheers,
    T.

After trying to find something that suits my playing style, I have actually now settled on 1...d6 against just about anything. Works well for me as it keeps things flexible and gives good counterplay.
