The questions are in the first post. The title is a declaration of topic, which might be taken as a statement of fact.
Are you saying that the french is the best response to 1.e4?

I dunno, I've been doing good with the Caro Kann against 1. e4, so I would have to say either that or the Sicilian.

I'm saying that you could draw that conclusion, and that I didn't ask for other suggestions in this thread. Clan 24492 is new and inspired this thread.

well we gave you other suggestions since WE think the french isn't the best response to e4.

I'm relatively new to it, but I love the French. Here's a game where I used 7...0-0 instead of Qc7:

Game 1940022

Until White's major blunder at the end, I still think I had the game won (even though I was down material).

What do you guys like for French defense books?
"Play the French" John Watson 3rd edn

THE book to have.

I'v only played the French about a dozen times. It can get pretty wild, especially if White allows Black to continue on the kingside. It's definitely a strong defense. My only problem with it is the French bishop; it's often just wasting space. This is why I think that the Caro-Kann may be an improvement over the French.

"Winning With The French" by Wolfgang Uhlmann is pretty good. I'll have to check into Watson's "Play the French".

I thought that there was only one edition of "Winning with the French" published in 1995

If so it will be VERY out-of-date.

"Play the french" 3edn was published in 2003 by comparison.
