Nf6 merly delays deciding ones defense while developing the knight and preventing white from playing e4. It's only downside is it allows white to play 2. Bg5 which I personally don't find very challenging, but some people do...

Edit: there is nothing wrong with 1. d4 d5 and in fact is a good way to learn.

You have to start a game before worrying about what defence to play. 😉

I like a little thing called 1... e6 I find it works good against both 2. e4 and 2. c4

Edit; For 2 e4 it goes into the french and for 2. c4 I play b6 and fianchetto

Try out the cambridge springs defence for black against d4. Most of the time, the struggle commencing will favour the black players... 😀
