Pop-ups have become worse at angelfire, so be careful if you visit http://www.angelfire.com/poetry/wulebgr/reviews.htm, where I review the best sites--FICS if you want free, ICC if you're willing to pay for a premium service.

ICC Hands down, though you have to pay.

play on ICC as a guest. You won't get a rating but its free and tons of ppl use it. Easy way to find a quick game.

Play on FICS (www.freechess.org) for free as a member. You will get a rating and your own handle. Plus, they have nicer interfaces than ICC's BlitzIn.

No one has mentioned Playchess.com yet. Excellent interface, robust anti-cheating checks and balances, regular tournaments and the opportunity to win money towards Chessbase products.

One year's membership free with any Chessbase engine bought (although mine hasn't expired in going on 2 years).

How can you say that?

Playchess.com is one of the few (if not the only) who kicks the most cheats as soon as they are discovered.
There's a ticker where once in a while appears the writing "XXXX was baned for engine use" or something like that.........
I appreciate a lot that policy.

I liked playchess.com but for some reason it wasn't downloading my completed games automatically to a file so I could analyze them (the screen was locking whenever my opponent or myself resigned and the game wouldn't save automatically OR manually). When I spoke to the Site Admins, they blamed it on my computer but it downloads completed games from FICS automatically and from USCL manually with no problem. Anybody else had this problem with Playchess?

Whenever I finish a game on playchess it is saved into the 'My Internet Games'. As far as I can tell it's working.

I like ICC because:

More GM's play there and I like to watch their games.

Alot more events for players to play in like simuls, material odds games, beat the master events, all types of tournaments going on all the time, and wild matches.

I actually like the interface for ICC more than playchess. The slightly older look appeals to me and the format for how the interface runs allows for more robustness. What I mean by that is the fact that you use commands for everything makes it easier for them to have more stuff.

They have bots that you can practice things against. Mating with the different material configurations, tactics problems, and actual chess problems are on there.

They have a huge database of games that you can search through, many played by strong players on ICC in good time controls that you can't find otherwise.

They cover all the major events, some with commentary.

With a subscription to ICC you get to listen to chessFM for free, which is like chess radio. You can get commentary by well known players to ongoing events, etc.

ICC support is better. They use players online at all times, so you can get answers immediately, which is not the case elsewhere.

ICC is da bomb yo. Best money I have every spent (although I get the student discount! 🙂)

No I don't work for ICC.

It's worked at times, but then not worked at other times - I had this problem with about half my games there. I just went over for the first time since September and did an upgrade, so maybe that will solve the glitch. If I can't get my games downloaded for after game analyses, the site is worthless to me. Anybody have an opinion on which of these three sites - Playchess, FICS or USCL - I'd have the best chance of getting a steady diet of G/60 or more (I hate blitz) and what time would be best for that on any of the above-named servers?

I had the same problem with the screen freezing. I quit playing there because of it. I did seem to have a higher rating there then on ICC. I suspect cheating is rampart on ICC. Not only with engine cheats, but different people using shared accounts (because its a pay site, maybe)
The playchess site seems to be a memory drain, and i suspect that the admins there where saying you pc was a volkswagon on the autobon with porsches. Try updating you memory or grahics card.
