Hi everyone,

I am a amatuer who knows general opening principle, simple middlegame concepts and tactics quite well however I do not have any knowledge on the end game.

Can someone recommend some good endgame books? I have Pandolfini's endgame book but I don't really like that. It doesn't really help me with endgame principles. I need something in a different approach.

Thanks.

I hope that is a temporary situation, this is the best endgame book that I have found. I have heard good things about the following books as well, perhaps someone else could comment on them:

Basic Chess Endings, Reuben Fine
Winning Chess Endings, Yasser Seirawan

It seems to be out of print, and hard to find allready.
Glad i have a copy.
Just bought it 2-3 years ago, how did it get to be a rare book so soon?
I looked at the main booksellers web sites, and came uo empty.
Theres on cd on ebay right now for about $40.
There are a few other good engame books, like the Mueller book, and other ones at chess cafe, under endgames, study and problems, in the USCF products page

If I've already read Seirawan's book, would any of you recommend reading this one, too (Dvoretskys Endgame Manual, that is)? Endgame study is boring, but if that book will help, I'll do it. I just wonder how much is overlapped from Seirawan's book.

What would be the next step in endgame study, for someone who's read Seirawan's endgame book? Suggestions?

Dvoretsky's book covers from the basic to the very advanced in a nice and accessible format. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Edit- I certainly have no delusions that I am a great endgame player, but this book will grow with you, and many players much stronger than me have also recommended it.

Well, I have to order from Amazon for some reason and Dovertsky's book is out of print. Any other suggestions?

I need something dynamic and easy to read. Something like Pandolfini's is just bad.

Better than to order from Amazon is to try fetchbook.info. This is a great site which will list about a dozen of the lowest prices from all over the web for any particular book. I've gotten books for as little as $ .01!

Try these:

Fine, “Basic Chess Endings”
Chernev, “Capablanca’s Best Chess Endings”
Averbakh, “Essential Chess Endings”
Kmoch, “Rubinstein’s Chess Masterpieces: 100 Selected Games,”
Mednis, “Practical Chess Endings”
