My dad and i play chess together and up t today he's really the only person i play.
his level of skill is vastly beyond mine.
i beat him occationally
but i want more of an edge from the beggining
I play e4 he plays the scilian
I can't play Ruy Lopez (although i like it) because he does the Sicilian
So what opening stratagy shuld i use to beat it
There ae so many variations of it
Yesterday we played like 11 games and i broke it and had an amazing 9 point advantage
Thanks

2. Bb5

It does something, it is sound and he will never have met it before. I played 2. Bb5 for a long time against the sicilian until I started playing 1. Nf3 so I could play the doodinthemood gambit more often.

Have a gander over:
1. e4 c5 2. Bb5! a6 3. Bc4 b5 4. Bxf7+
and
1. e4 c5 2. Bb5! Qb6 3. Nc3 looking at Nd5

Of course, it may not work.
1. e4 c5 2. Bb5 a6 3. Bc4 Nc6
and black is back where he wants to be.

Give it a shot though.

After c5, play d4 followed by c3. If black captures this pawn, then Nxc3.

Yes, White be down by a pawn material-wise but can gain tempo by rapidly developing pieces.

The Queen's column and Bishop's diagonals are open...

Have a go...

Here is more to that variation.

1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 3.c3 dxc3 (3. ... Nf6 4.e5 / 3. ... d5 4.exd5)
4.Nxc3 Nc6 (maybe 4. ... d6 or 4. ... e6)

The same setup works

Play Nf3, Bc4, Qe2, 0-0 , and Rfd1

Sometimes when you play Rfd1 you threaten a sneaky e5 based on a black queen on the d file and a pawn on d6.

This is a nice wholesome gambit.
Unless someone is booked up pretty well they aren't likely to completely bust it.

1. e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g3 g6

Is another good one.

White plays Bg2, d3, f4, Nf3, 0-0

When black castles kingside, white can build up an attack with h3 and g4 followed maybe by Qe1 and Qh4.

I really feel bad about this. I should be supporting your dad
we are probably of the same generation.

Need more info and I can give you a trap or two.

Which variation of the Sicilian does he play?
(I have a cracker anti Dragon trap that has brought me a few scalps)

I play Bb5 all the time v The Sicilian.
Back in '82 (ahh the good old) days. I faced a Czech IM.
I chose a Bb5 line (back then it was still a minor novelty) I won.

Have quite a good score with it OTB

You will be happy with the Bb5 line if you play the Lopez.
The first 3 moves are the same!

(if he plays the 2...e6 line then 3.b4 is good fun).

You also mentioned the Ruy Lopez.

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 is very similar.

White can inflict doubled pawns in that one or

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bb5+

In this one white castles quickly plays Re1 c3 and d4.

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6

you have a choice

3.d3 very closed and slow

or

3.c3 to get in d4

I prefer to stick with games in which gambits are not used. I think one of the most pressing and uncomftorable lines to play against is g4. If your dad is under 1600 then he may struggle when playing against this. The line to that is e4 c5 Nf3 d6 d4 cxd4 Nxd4 Nf6 Nc3 a6 Be3 e6 g4. Many players including myself hate playing against this line. It is so unusual that many people don't know how to defend against it. Besides you can learn more from a game that has a solid reputation than a gambit that cannot be played at the higher levels. if you don't like g4 then play f3 instead plan on Qd2 and 0-0-0 and a kingside pawn storm against black. These types of games will earn you more wins.

Game 5497026
Game 5144881

are two of my better games with this gambit. Dragon Fire is a 2000+ rated player who uses it extensively, look up some of his games for more ideas.

yes i tried it on myself and i olike it
but i play Bb5 quite every white game : ( so it may not work
I think he does Nc6 as a responce and ussually ends up getting the tempo and one more peice developed
Very good againds someone who never has seen Bb5

thanks much
