When you have a doubt, you should feel to ask and the arbirter should be there to help and not tell you you have to know this.

JB that is a good question.

Actually at what point in the game did Korchnoi ask about castling?
Well it turns out I was wrong.

I'm currently at the British Library looking at the 1977 version of Korchnoi's biography 'Chess is my Life' (the more recent version doesn't help).

After Black's 17th move (i.e. immediately prior to playing 0-0) he writes ...

“At this point I went up to the controller, and asked whether it was legal for me to castle when my rook was attacked. I was assured that it was. Afterwards, this incident was cited as being an indication of how extremely tired the players were. But in fact, out of the two and a half thousand games that I had played, there had never been an instance where it had been necessary of me to castle when my rook was attacked, and I was not sure that I understood correctly the rules of the game!”

Now there is a display of dedication to RHP chess forum.

Cockney JB does not skank around the net like the rest of us looking for answers.

He jumps on the 238 Hackney to Westminster bus and actually
goes to the British Museum to get the facts.

Hats off to JB.

When there I hope you made a comment about those Viking
gaming pieces robbed from a Viking grave on the Firth of Forth in
the summer of 1826 and being sold to tourists as the Isle of Lewis chessmen.
