I was wondering if it is possible for white to checkmate in three moves from this position. It's white's move, obviously.

It seems to be an odd thing to wonder, unless you know that it's a mate in 3 problem. Is it?

    Fastest I can do it is in 4: 1.Rd8+,Qc8 2.Na6+,Ka8 3.Qb8+,Qxb8 4.Nc7# checkmate.
I see no way to improve that line.

well at a glance, Kna6+ pawn takes, rook d7+ (from queen) queen goes in for kill after but bishop can delay for one move so it would be four moves,.... too tired to look too closely but white can easily win from this position. If nobody has answered by the morning then I will look properly.

my moves are all check though
Its 2.20 AM here and my eyes are closing I would love to have a go at this one because I think the key is the knight check first, but by the time I get up this will be solved.
Knight checks, pawn takes knight, rook d7 check from queen, king goes into corner, queen takes knight check king moves b8 queen goes to checkmate.... thats still 4 though

Why don't you just plug the position into an engine? An engine could find it almost instantly.

Yes,all check, but the 2nd check is given by a hanging queen. After 1.Na6+,bxa6 2.Rd7+??,Rxf4 how will you mate black with your lone rook?

Sorry, I should have done a quote. My engine question was for jonesvich. BTW, my engine gave me an answer, but I'll hold off on mentioning it in case you still want to figure it out on your own.

I don't have an engine, though that's probably an investment I should make. Are there online ones?

Sure, there are a number of free ones. Probably the best free one is the Arena GUI. Go to the link below, then go to the "Arena Downloads" section. For starters, just download the Arena 1.1 Setup 1. (Version 1.1 is stable, and Setup 1 comes with the SOS 5.1 engine, which isn't bad.) Later you can download other free engines and add them to the Arena GUI.
