I'd agree with the sentiments about descriptive notation. It shouldn't put you off purchasing a particular book as it is quite easy to get your head around, and some of the books can be fantastic value.
However, saying that, I did buy Larsen's Best Games of Chess (http://www.hardingesimpole.co.uk/biblio/184382082x.htm) and was quite irritated by the fact that the book hadn't been converted to alegebraic, considering the price they charged. Dover do print some of the classics (http://store.doverpublications.com/by-subject-chess.html). They don't convert the notation to algebraic, but then you don't have to pay what I feel to be a premium price. (John Watson talks about this in his book reviews at TWIC (http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/jwatsonbkrev69.html).)
Personally, I would look at the cost difference involved and check whether the updated versions of the book were all that different. If there wasn't much added I would go for the cheaper versions.

Not sure about all that but I have a book How to Reassess Your Chess and it is very helpful to have the pgn of the games to look at in ChessDB instead of writing out the FEN and copying moves one by one messing up and having to start over again. You still have to have the book to follow along the moves.
Originally posted by ArrakOne of my favorite books is The Game of Chess by Siegbert Tarrasch. But, I have reservations about the algebraic editon by Hays Publishing. That edition leaves out some material that was in the original book. As a "purist", I don't like to see valuable material expunged from any book, let alone a classic like The Game of Chess. Overall, the Hays' edition will still be a boon to any chess library. I just don't like to see classic books "edited" for anything other than correcting typos, or grammer, etc.

SF,as an author of a chessbook, would you mind if someone bought your book and made such a DB stripped of all your comments and annotations? It would just be a list of the games in your book.I don't understand what's wrong with that.
