I was reading that there are more books on chess than all the other games combined. Most of these books have been written in the last 50 years. If you were a chess player in the middle of the depression what would your library have in it? I can think of chess fundamentals and chess primer by capablanca. My System by nimzo. Maybe chess the easy way by Fine (actually published early 1940's). How many chess books had been published in the United States by the depression? How many total books were there on chess by the 1930's?

No idea, but I suspect most books are recent. Nowadays it's very easy to dump a database into a book, give it a few annotations and publish the latest opening boox on xxx.
