In regards to the use of chess engines and im31 what exactley would be "in it" for im31 to sit around for hours beating unsuspecting players by using a chess engine in hundreds of games? And if someone does wish to do that, and spend that much time at it, does that not offer a great challenge for the top rated players here. After all I know I only enjoy playing players that are better than myself so i can get better, thus im31, if he was using an engine, offered rhp top players a challenging opponent..., correct? I guess i miss the big problem here.

Originally posted by tonytiger41We put a lot of effort into these games, spread out over a month there is the research, working out variations and so on. I don't want to put in all that effort to have some dope with an engine win.
clearly it isn't fair. but my point is that chess games are not that important.
Originally posted by DeepThoughtbut isnt the point of playing that game out over a month to get better? I'm not trying to say cheating is ok, not at all. But playing on an online sight is for fun and to get better. The rhp ratings mean nothing, there is no money on the table, and there is little to no recognition. Granite it is against the rules of the sight so i guess something must be done if you can prove cheating, but in theory i dont see the issue. If i spend a month on a game only to lose to a "computer" well so what, if I would of played better maybe I would of won. In the end my rating would not of been effected that much and I probably learning something from the game. If anything the next time I play a "person" who will make mistakes I will be that much better.

Originally posted by Regicidalno i don't see the irony. to respond to your comments, "is it important" is an individual perspective which i can indeed state; and yes getting better at chess is important, but that is completely separate from rhp wins and losses.
Do you see the irony in your statement? How do you know it's not that important? Top rated players ge that way because they think chess is important!
It quite clearly states in the t's & c's on this site that engine use is forbidden, therefore people using this site fairly do so to play human opponents. The fact is that someone with a wet lettuce for a brain could use an engine and undeservedly beat another player, someone who has actually put some effort into their moves. I don't like losing but I can certainly appreciate the moves made by a better player, I just can't get the same feeling if I know that a computer is controlling the pieces.
It doesn't help either to think of the snot riddled pre-pubescent idiot laughing like a hyena when he claims another automated victory (at least that's how I imagine them).

Clearly some people don't mind who/what they play against as long as it is a good game of chess. I can understand that.
However, one of the main attractions of RHP is that you get to play other people from all around the world. I like that.
If I wanted to play against an engine, I wouldn't need to join an online chess site to do it. I could just fire up Fritz, Shredder, Junior, or whatever.
Like in any OTB game, I want a chance to beat my opponents. I don't want to play against chess perfection.
If you are using an engine to play your games here at RHP, you are being dishonest. You are cheating your opponents. More importantly, you are cheating yourself.
