I remember a time someone said that he had a forced mate against me which would involve a few sacrifices so I moved a piece onto a wierd square and he started sacrificing for the mate anyway, saying I shouldnt be playing on.
Unfortunately for him, the piece was threatening a check which I could play half way through his attack and getting back in time to not only prevent the mate but be sure I was substantial material ahead.

I don't think it's bad form but no doubt some players will hate you for it.
But why bother announcing mate?It's not like it'll make you look cool or anything.And if you're wrong you'll look rather silly.

isn't that just pretty much what always seems to happen when you think you've got an unstoppable long combination. there's that one little weird move that would not make sense in any other position, but suddenly it's the one that leaves you a piece down. and of course your opponent finds it, even if he found nothing else before. 🙂
The guy in my example made it worse because he stood up and began counting, aloud, the moves to mate. When he got to the discovered check he stopped counting and his opponent said, "What's wrong? Run outta fingers?" Classic!
