if you haven't chatted during a game; is it considered bad form to announce "checkmate in so many moves."?

I remember a time someone said that he had a forced mate against me which would involve a few sacrifices so I moved a piece onto a wierd square and he started sacrificing for the mate anyway, saying I shouldnt be playing on.

Unfortunately for him, the piece was threatening a check which I could play half way through his attack and getting back in time to not only prevent the mate but be sure I was substantial material ahead.

I don't think it's bad form but no doubt some players will hate you for it.
But why bother announcing mate? It's not like it'll make you look cool or anything. And if you're wrong you'll look rather silly.

i thought it would seem arrogant, just wondering what others thoughts on the matter would be. i've never said it or had it said to me, but i feel the urge now and again. especially when i beat someone i didn't think i would or if i make a good comeback or something.

I saw a player declare mate in 5 not realising that one of his checks could by blocked by an interposition of a piece that uncovered a discovered check that led to mate for his opponent.

Personally I'd think nothing of it,but you can be certain some players will find you an arrogant prick.

isn't that just pretty much what always seems to happen when you think you've got an unstoppable long combination. there's that one little weird move that would not make sense in any other position, but suddenly it's the one that leaves you a piece down. and of course your opponent finds it, even if he found nothing else before. 🙂

Yup, that's why I keep schtum! If anyone asks how my game is going, I always say, "terrible." Unless it's blitz when smack-talk is the order of the day.

The guy in my example made it worse because he stood up and began counting, aloud, the moves to mate. When he got to the discovered check he stopped counting and his opponent said, "What's wrong? Run outta fingers?" Classic!

LOL.

This sort of thing wouldn't bother me but I wouldn't resign any earlier than I would have anyway. I don't see any benefit to announcing mate though.

if you're the one receiving the pronounment, would your opinion change?
