Just broke down and got a Palm.
Pocket fritz is $50!! Is it worth it? what are some alternatives?
Any good ones for a 1800+ player?

If you have a cell phone I know you can get strong chess programs for it. Before a huge tourney on of the super Gm's was playing against a cell phone which another GM had and he only got a draw against it. He was suprised how strong the program was for a cellphone.

Check online. I'm sure you can find some good deals there.

chessmaster by gameloft (on a sony ericsson K750 it's pretty strong, but at the lower levels it does what all chess progs do ... hangs x amount of material and at the higher levels i just cannot beat it) supports lots of newer cellphones out there, and ...

chessbuddy (www.coffeebreakmedia.com not sure if they're still in business) which actually plays quite decently and fairly human-like (ie, little positional errors and what not with the occasional tactical error)

pocket pc is the way forward for handheld chess, convekta do a whole load of great programs for the pocket pc including ct-art3.0.

For the palm i found chess tiger to be a good program
