I never have any luck with these open-board, open-ended solutions...

*sigh*

I know!
I'll wait for Sir to solve it! πŸ™‚

Hmm,it took me about a hour(with a 20 minute break) to solve this one.Guess it's tough enough for me.But I always like a challenge,let's try a tougher one πŸ™‚

OK, you asked for a tough one.

White: Kb4 Ra7 Bd3
Black: Ke8 Rf8 f7 g6
White plays and wins.

I keep thinking that the first move is to separate the king and rook by Bd3-b5 but I don't know where to go from there...

I don't think Bb5 is the way to go.

Edit: Yeah, I know Bb5 isn't the way to go. White starts Bf5!, and black is finished. After ...gxf5, Kc5 black can't stop the loss of his rook.

lol...

Hi bbar! I'll defer to the rating in the stratosphere...

My goal was to either a) force a bishop/rook exchange or b) stall black's advance long enough to leverage my king into a mating manouver.... either idea sound likely?

Hi Decanter,

After you force the black king to d8, what do you do? You'd have to keep your bishop on the e8-a4 diagonal, correct? If not, you'd allow black's rook on e8, and if that rook gets free, I don't see how white can force a win. So, you're looking at moving your rook or your king after ...Kd8. If you move your king, black responds with f5, and again his rook is free. You can put the black king in check a couple ways, but I don't see any way to force a mate or a bishop/rook exchange. You may pick off those two pawns with your bishop, but the position still looks drawn.

You are right! Bf5 makes the rescue action with f5 impossible and wins the rook (or chackmates).

I think I get it, but what happens if black fails to take the bait?

Does the trap still work?

I always struggle with puzzles like this because I can't see how the trap is unavoidable if black knows its there...

Help?

Of course, lets look at the alternatives:

Rg8? or Rh8? lose the rook after Ra8+

Kd8? is followedby Kc5 with two options:
- gxf5? Kd6! Kc8 Ra8+
- any other move by black is followed by Kd6 and Ra8#

g5? Kc5 f6 (else one of the above holds) Bg6+ Kd8 Kd6 Kc8 and Ra8+ wins the rook

f6? is the best (the other moves are worse) alternative Bxg6+ Kd8 Kc5 f5 (trying to free f6 for the rook to escape) Bf7! (stopping that escape) Rh8 (if Kc8 then Ra8+ is good enough) Kd6 Be6 and black has to take the bishop to stay alive a few more moves.

I was so proud of my right answers early on but this stuff is really getting to be beyond me. Even with your explanation I have trouble understanding.
Thanks for taking the time to walk me through it, though!
