It builds many mind muscles that people (re: Adults that don't know) don't think about for youngsters. There are chess clubs in schools, but those are usually extra-ciricular (sp?) activities. That's not good enough. There should be a 2 to 4 week span where the only thing that is taught in one of the required classes concentrates on chess. Elementary school is best as the younger you learn something, the better you learn it.

Eeveryone in the world should be able to learn to play chess, and everyschool should be teaching it. I think it brings people more together and people can forget their problems for a while because they're thinking about the game.
I agree. Chess should be taught in the schools. Most kids today are into all sorts of brainless crap like pokemon or something. It would be nice for them to learn a "thinking" activity that they can play and enjoy the rest of their lives. It would also probably have a good effect on their math and standardized test scores. I recently taught my son how to play chess and have tried to get him into it as much as possible. Since it isn't taught in the schools and there are no chess clubs for kids his age, we decided to start our own. So far we have about 12 members (parents and their kids). We meet once a month and talk about strategy, tactics...and to play a few games.

What masochistic person would torture schoolchildren by forcing them to play the tedious and pointless game of chess? School should teach math, science, and writing; skills that will aid children in society. As much as we all love chess, it renders no service to anyone outside the chess community.
