No. If you want to take people out of their book and experience, play c4
1. ... e5 reversed sicilain is the antidote.

The Sicilian is one of blacks best responses to e4, so playing it(the Sicilian) as white with an extra tempo is even better (in theory). I don't play it as black but it's my favorite as white.

d4 = more closed games, more positional chess
c4 = more closed games, more positional chess (often transposes to 1. d4 openings)
Nf3 = either Hypermodern play from white, or transpositional device to openings that start with the other 3 (e.g. 1. e4 King's Indian Attack, 1. d4 Colle, etc.)

you said you wante ...[text shortened]... ..it's not the best description but considering your overall demeanor, I suggest you play e4
No, that's just wrong. It all depends on how you play it.

True, I am beginning to really enjoy QGA with 3. e4. For instance my first game on the site in said line...

Play chess like a man - play everything like Kasparov. Also sac and throw the kitchen sink at your opponent like Tal. Win a pawn, switch into Capablanca mode and convert it into a win.

No, it's not "just wrong"

You're right, how games turn out depend on how you play (and how your opponent plays) but I'm just giving a generalization. Sure there's the more exciting d4 games (e.g. Modern Benoni, QGA...thou it isn't even the main line...) but on the other hand there's the Colle and QGD Orthodox and such.

Besides, the guy's under 1200 so openings are the least of his issues

or even better, beat your opponent with your fists until he runs off then win on time 😀

Ha, everyone's seen that - play 1. a3 - it's not all that good, but there's the off chance of the Sicilian Najdorf in reverse.

A TON of food for thought. Thanks!
