I don't play much chess really, but i'm interested in playing. The problem is, that i'm no genious and was just wondering if it's possible to become a good chess player and not be intelligent. Someone told me it depends most on knowledge and pattern recognition. What do you think?
I guess most chess players iv talked to have come across as intelligent, they tend to be dedicated and enjoy the mental challenge that playing/learning chess provides. I dont think you have to be a genius to be good at chess just have to enjoy the study. And yes pattern recognition is very importaint but it just comes with time and play.

anyway, it depends on mental ability of course... chess is all about mental visualization. You don't have to be a genius to be good at chess, but it helps.

And as to who cares.....me, I wouldnt ask if I didnt want to know the answer.
To answer your question, I think anyone can get good at chess, but there are some interesting things to think about:
1. There is a lot of pattern recognition involved, and alot of memory in general. It's not easy to pack opening theory, middle game principles, tactics(the most pattern recognition of all!), specific endgame positions, endgame principles, and other things like chess notation, etc.. into your brain.
2. From my experience, it seems to be harder to improve if you are an adult that takes up the game. Kids and young adults pick up the ideas and remember things about chess alot better. Again, this isn't scientific, but I definitely believe it's true in most cases.
3. Chess is alot of work to get good. I have been playing for 5 or 6 years, and look where I am. π But if you end up liking the game, then it's not work!
So if you have some time on your hands and don't mind putting in a little work, then chess is certainly a good choice, and a very fun game to play. But if you are looking to just play for fun, then don't worry about getting good unless you want to .
Being a mod, I would like to just drop a little comment in here. If you don't like something someone has said or you think a particular thread is useless, then don't post! It's very simple. Masscat, your post is not only negative, but absolutely useless and off topic. By saying you are likely to get flamed by posting, not only are you opening yourself to more flaming, but spamming the chess forums with something that is no way chess related. Let's leave it at this, and just discuss chess. If you don't want to do this, then head off to a different forum, or contact Russ if you think the Chess Forum isn't accomplishing it's goal. π
