To answer your question, I think anyone can get good at chess, but there are some interesting things to think about:
1. There is a lot of pattern recognition involved, and alot of memory in general. It's not easy to pack opening theory, middle game principles, tactics(the most pattern recognition of all!), specific endgame positions, endgame principles, ...[text shortened]... are looking to just play for fun, then don't worry about getting good unless you want to .

I don't play much chess really, but i'm interested in playing. The problem is, that i'm no genious and was just wondering if it's possible to become a good chess player and not be intelligent. Someone told me it depends most on knowledge and pattern recognition. What do you think?

Being a mod, I would like to just drop a little comment in here. If you don't like something someone has said or you think a particular thread is useless, then don't post! It's very simple. "Do I need to be intelligent to play good chess?"
To be able to play good chess you have to have a special kind of intelligence. Lets call it chess intelligence. Pattern recognition is surely one important part of this intelligence.
"But do I really have to have this kind of intelligence to play good chess?"
No, but it helps. If you don't have it you must have something else: Dedication and/or energy.
Would Einstein be a good chess player? Or Hawking? or Gauss, Newton or da Vinci? I don't know. They were/are certainly intelligent but did/do they have chess intelligence?

It's all relative. So, you might not be a wiz. There are plenty of people who can play their butts off, but can't articulate, can't do long division, can't compose an opus. You don't have to be a genius at all. You just have to enjoy the game. And, if you enjoy the game enough, that in itself will facilitate your studying the game, and generally spending the time to get better. Just have fun with this immensely rich game, and who knows? You may find that you are better at Chess than anything you do. Have a good one, and keep playing.
Originally posted by BedlamThere was a funny post there... This is a "relative" good game by Einstein - his strategy was basically more "space" and faster "time" combining together to create a "spacetime" attack against Oppenheimer - but the real crushing point of the game is ... 14. Nxb3 ??!! where Oppenheimer explodes the "c sqared" [of] what Einstein formulated.

lol, because oppenheimer used e=mc2 to explode the atom bomb...
you dont have to be intelligent in the slightest... whoever said you need to be intelligent to be good at chess..? i cant believe chess players have actually convinced themselves they are intelligent because they're good at the game, the only reason someone is good at chess is because they play the game a lot, to say you're intelligent because you play is just illogical - really, think about it... if i said i play a lot of basketball so i must be intelligent wouldn't carry much weight, yet chess is not different, i have a 1600+ rating and only got that by playing the game a lot - you do not need to be intelligent, you need to enjoy playing, its as simple as that
No, you don't have to be intelligent. You just appear intelligent when you play good chess and people think you're intelligent. More like common sense. Something that most people have, but sometimes don't use. If you could try to match the iq of people to their rating, you'd find quite a bit of randomness. People with low ratings at RHP would have higher intelligence (in the iq test sense) than people with higher ratings. And some higher rated people would have a higher iq. when you lose agame, you look dumb, when you win you look smart. but it's all relative.
