I think it all depends at what level you're playing. You may consider it fun to do without all preparation and theory. However, at higher levels, without a reasonable knowledge of opening and endgame theory, you are simply handicapping yourself severely. Even understanding of middlegame positions is almost impossible without studying the games of strong players.

OTB, you can think of your own moves all you like. But if people online and in CC use books and sometimes even engines, why should we handicap ourselves by not allowing ourselves to have a chance?

When are people going to play chess and stop worrying about the best opening move and what fritz rates rates as plus 7 points etc etc, people who use engines and fritz to "get them through the openings"are not playing their own game and are CHEATING!!!

If you cannot play a game of chess without resorting to the best point gain via engine analasis then ge ...[text shortened]... ase and engine users who are not doing the work themselves, shame on you, you lazy cheaters!
I am sick of people who cannot play their own game of chess without looking at a database for playing their first 10 moves, its sad, and its not YOU playing, its another GM who once played 10 years ago!!!

Yes, I've seen these wonderful people who think up their own openings. They usually start 1.h4 and 2.Rh3.

Chess is a game of borrowed ideas. Just playing games against stronger players will give you ideas to use in your own games.C

Why stop at openings? Let's make studying tactics books illegal. After all, we don't want people borrowing tactical shots from GM games. They should think up their own!

You might as well tell a theoretical physicist that he is lazy for studying the writings of Einstein. Come up with your own damn ideas!
