I was just curious if these ratings are based on the ELO system?

Thanks

It uses the same formula to calculate it, but the ratings here would not reflect ratings anywhere else. All it would show is your relative skill against the rest of the players on this site.

Which raises another question that my English friends can help me with. How does the BCF compare to Elo? For instance, a 2000 USCF player would have a BCF equivalent of what? I suppose I could look this up myself, but since I've already typed this up... 😛

The old ECF to ELO formula was (ECF * 8) + 600 = ELO. Using this formula an ELO rating of 2000 would be equivalent to an ECF grade of 175.

However, a new formula is now used for ECF grades below 216. This is (ECF * 5) + 1250 = ELO. Using the new formula an ELO rating of 2000 is equivalent to an ECF grade of 150.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I've always understood that USCF ratings are reckoned to be 100 points higher than ELO ratings. However when I checked the current top US 100 players: http://tinyurl.com/ymq3dn it seemed to me that they might only be about 50 points higher (e.g. Kamsky has a USCF rating of 2753 and an ELO rating of 2705).

Isn't it Elo for FIDE and USCF for the PCA? It's been about ten years for me, so I'm not sure what has changed, or if PCA is even still in place. lol
