so i was playing uchess and the player moved a pawn from his 7th rank and put my king in check. but it wouldn't allow me to take the pawn with en passant. if you are put in check can you not perform en passant if your king is checked on the 5th rank and you have a pawn that was passed?
Check out the pretty animated picture.

Only pawns on the 4th rank (black) or 5th rank (white) can capture en passant.
In other words, the enemy pawn has to step through the square the pawn attacks, and then beside the capturing pawn all in the same move..
I'm unaware of any rule prohibiting en passant solely on the basis of check unless en passant capture would either place or leave your king in check (which is a different rule).
i know what en passant was his pawn moved 2 spaces ahead and mine was passed. i was white in the game by the way. it may bave been the fifth rank but i know i could have captured en passant. sry it was the 5th rank my pawn was at and my king was put in check. ne ways it wouldn't let me capture which meant the difference from winning the game and drawing it.
Originally posted by kmac27Perhaps the resulting position after the capture would put your king in check (e.g. the opponent had a queen, rook on the fifth rank). Could you give a bit more details on the position? A FEN would be best :-)

i dont know how could you show me how.
e.g. http://www.[this_chess_site].com/core/playchess.php?gameid=3201934 - HERE
If you take just the gameid from there (the above example it would be: 3201934), when posting your reply click the "Insert link to a game" link (displayed below the POST button) and insert the gameid and hit "OK". This will paste the required code into your post and allow you to continue to type the rest of your reply.
Alternatively you can simply type the code:
e.g. [ gameid ] 3201934 [ / gameid ] (without the spaces)

there were only pawns on the board. i dont understand the misconception about it only pawn and king endgames i have no idea how to do endgame. could you give me instructions on how to do it?
If you could remember the position and show it either as FEN or as a list of pieces and corresponding squares (e.g. White: Ke1, pawns: e4, g5, etc. Black: Kh8, etc.). We might be able to find whether the en passant was legit and it was a bug of the site, or there was something non-legit about it. Sorry for the delay, I am lost in work these days.
