EPD (Extended Position Description) is superset of FEN which allows addition of custom position attributes. If you are not easily bored by technical descriptions, check this: http://www.very-best.de/pgn-spec.htm; search for 16.2
FEN is really simple notation - it just looks scary. It describes each file on the board (with '/' separator) using capital letters (first letter of piece English name) for white pieces, lowercase letters for black pieces and numbers for # of empty squares. At the end, 5 fields are added - who is to move ("w" - white, "b" - black), castling availability for each side (combination of "K" or "k" - kingside and "Q" or "q" - queenside or "-" if castling is unavailable), possible en passant capture square on next move ("-" if not applicable), # of half moves since last capture/pawn move (to enforce drawing rule) and # of moves in the game.

Move your knight to c6 and that rank would read r1bqkbnr.
Thought it might hep someone to actually see it.
