Originally posted by chris stephensI've only ever seen one example where promotion to something other than a queen was the only path to a win (It was to a knight).
when i played at school our coach always encouraged us to promote our pawns with rooks instead of queens, cos queens sometimes get you stalemates instead of wins.
its happened to a few of my opponents here.
How about instead of that you just check before you make your move that your opponent will have a move to make (unless you are checking him of course). Doesn't take much to avoid giving stalemate.
Originally posted by XanthosNZi meant my opponent has promoted to a queen which meant i drew the game instead of lost it. will look up these games for you.

Originally posted by arrakisAs Arrakis points out it depends on the game. For example with other minor pieces on the board im probably going to take the queen and minor pieces. The more material on the board the more you might need to transport that materials infulence around, the queen is very good at this, where as the rooks take several moves to exert their infulence over a new part of the board. While the two rooks are thought to be worth 1 more point than a queen, it all depends on the game. If the king is exposed and their is minor pieces on the table or loose pawns then the queen is probably going to snap them up sooner or later.
WHOA! You guys aren't mentioning anything about the pawn structure!
The 2 rooks are only better if the side with the rooks doesn't have loose pawns!
