Topalov should be incensed. Every time FIDE changes course in mid-stream, the credibility of their claim to regulate the World Championship title erodes. These changes strengthen Kramnik's claim, and weaken Topalov's.

Topalov earned the title, and for the first time since 1993, when FIDE stripped Kasparov of the title, the World Champion is the highest rated active player. Indeed, aside from Anand's one-year reign, it is the first time the FIDE World Champion is in the top ten.

There is a certain aspect of Karmic retribution for Topalov's recent statements that he didn't want to play a "lesser" player like Kramnik, ain't there?? That's what you get when you hitch your wagon to the knuckleheads at FIDE.

I don't think Topalov's reign will last very long. I give it a year.

yes.

2696 is the Arctic Circle event; 2699 is the machinations of FIDE.

Flip the six over and you're okay.

Nope - still not getting it (both 2696 and 2699 point to the Arctic Circle event in my browser).

Try back-trolling to the main chessbase site, and then following the link forward.
