I am not a sports psychologist or any variety of psychologist but I think that whatever they say about other sports would be worth looking into in chess too.
I also suspect that normal sleeping might be quite relevant.
Some folks have a lifestyle in which they sleep regular hours and some folks don`t
and I suspect that is quite relevant though not the only factor.
I suspect diet is not very relevant except perhaps in ultra rare weird circumstances.

Hmm, a person who is in "form" never needs to complain after the game about the accomodation, a toothache, being busy etc. etc.
Generally what I mean is if you have been performing at a certain level for six months and then all of a sudden you start performing much higher or lower, but your routine such as sleep, diet, exercise, time of performing task, mood, levels of anxiety, self esteem, memory etc etc had stayed the same. What else could affect your form?
