Does anyone know what factors influence form? Both in chess and generally? Have scientists/psychologists ever investigated it?

Thanks, J

Form is the lack of need for excuses, maybe?

HI,

Just to clarify I mean form in the context of regularity - a persons base or average performance.

I don't understand how having or not having an 'excuse' would affect that.
But thankyou for the suggestion.

I am not a sports psychologist or any variety of psychologist but I think that whatever they say about other sports would be worth looking into in chess too.

I also suspect that normal sleeping might be quite relevant.
Some folks have a lifestyle in which they sleep regular hours and some folks don`t
and I suspect that is quite relevant though not the only factor.

I suspect diet is not very relevant except perhaps in ultra rare weird circumstances.

Health and fitness will help maintain your form.
Alcohol or drugs could damage it.
Proper/regular sleeping patterns will help.
A good diet helps.

etc etc.

Is that what you mean?

Hmm, a person who is in "form" never needs to complain after the game about the accomodation, a toothache, being busy etc. etc.

Having a private bathroom to cheat from helps maintain good form.

In a tournament I would definately recommend staying at hotel site if possible.
I almost think that folks staying at the hotel the tournament is at should lose half a point automatically for having such an advantage.

Ah I understand what you mean now thanks for clarifying.

Generally what I mean is if you have been performing at a certain level for six months and then all of a sudden you start performing much higher or lower, but your routine such as sleep, diet, exercise, time of performing task, mood, levels of anxiety, self esteem, memory etc etc had stayed the same. What else could affect your form?

Chess improvement comes in leaps and bounds...up and down...never constant.
