I used the fried live for the first time today in a 3 min blitz game. After Nxf7 I was out of my book, but I still liked it, nice blitz weapon!

Well... I'm glad you enjoyed it, but I suggest you go through a few games before giving it another outing: http://www.queensac.com/archive/openings/friedliver.htm

yes, I know I didn't play it by the book, but I just htought it was real fun, I would never play it in a rated game or otb or something, I just think that it's a nice blitz weapon

It's good fun, even in correspondence. I have some on-going fried liver-ish games so I'm going to leave this thread now.

I always keep plenty of grilled onions on hand for the times someone throws Fried Liver my way. Tasty!

if your opponent allows nxf7 and allows the fried liver, its the best move to take on f7, fritz will recomend it. ng5 is not the best bacause of the na5 line sacing a pawn where black get a lot of play

6.d4 is a playable alternative to 6.Nxf7 the sac cannot really
be prevented.

I saw a brillaint game recently where Black played 7...Qf6

Which was a Black win. White cocked up by thinking the game was
going to win itself. It was an OTB game and featured one of the deepest
traps I've seen on a chessboard.

Will try and find it.

Please post this game GP... I rather think white is better there after Bxe5.

OP: typically 7. Qf3+ is better than Qh5+.

Octavious what would you have done had he played 10 ..Nxc2+ This is from memory and I haven't even used winboard to check the game. Well played BTW, I hope to play you on the blitz thing soon.

I would just have played a king move, if he takes my rook his knight (one of the few defending pieces) can not help the black king. I know I made a lot of mistakes, but it was 3 min blitz, and I am no star at blitz in the first place.

The Fried Liver is more than fine to play in OTB games - I myself have won every single game with it when I have played it OTB (around twenty games). All I'm saying is that you should go through some other people's games so you can see what sort of ideas work for White.

I had a game in the London League which started like this:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Nxd5? 6. Nxf7 Kxf7 7. Qf3+ Qf6 8. Bxc3+ Qxf6?? 9. Bxf6

At this stage I realised that his 8th move was illegal, and rather reluctantly I pointed this out to him and we backtracked to that move.

I'm quickly becoming disenchanted with the Italian Game. I used to play it exclusively as white. After 3... Bc5, white has a nice, comfortable game. But the 2 knights defense can give you fits. I don't play 4. Ng5 against the 2 knights any more since a blitz game where black played 4... Na4 and I'm sitting there trying to consolidate my one pawn advantage and, all of a sudden, POW, the whole black army comes marching down the middle of the board towards my uncastled king.

Playing 4. d4 leaves the e pawn hanging. I know it's playable, but I don't feel comfortable with it. 4. d3 is just, to me at least, a very "unwhite" move. You're basically abandoning the initiative. If you want to pretend you're black, you might as well just play the KIA.

4. Nc3 (this is what I usually play these days) makes you sac a pawn or at least get a weaker pawn structure after 4... Nxe4 5. 0-0 (not 5. Nxe4 d5!). You get some attacking chances that way, but you'd better close the deal or you're gonna have a weak endgame.

I used to wonder why the Ruy was considered better than the Italian. Now I know... it's because of 3... Nf3!

THe fied liver is very fun for lower rated games but there are just too many ways to play against it and most of them are good (Im talking about d5)
