I had an argument today with a friend about whether or not the Fried Liver is a reasonable opening. What are your thoughts on it?
For those of you who don't know it is 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Nxd5 6. Nxf7
Edits for spelling 🙂

My initiation to the Fried Liver (Fegatello) attack was my second simul game against a GM. I had Black and had no idea what I was doing. (I still don't, but that's beside the point.) I'd never even heard of the Fried Liver, and I accidently stumbled into it. I made the common beginner mistake of failing to play 7... Ke6 after White's 7.Qf3+. The GM fried my liver in very short order. I'm sure he was chuckling to himself, but to his credit, he was very respectful to me.

Uh, can anyone tell me how to avoid the fried liver (as black)? other than not playing e4. if it's unavoidable, which I expect it might be as black, how do I move so as to not get killed by it?

I recently read somewhere that Nigel Short's comment on this position was something like, "Isn't Black just down a pawn here?"
Most theorists that I'm aware of think that Black has adequate compensation for the pawn.
