The post that was quoted here has been removedI think that was a BBC film called 'The Grass Arena', which was about a tramp called John Healy who was taught chess by his cell mate in a prison. They didn't have a chess set or board so they just called out the moves to each other. After he got out of prison he joined a chess club and played in a few tournaments in London, managing to win one of them.
The film doesn't seem to have been released on DVD. But the guy wrote a very good book, which they based the film on.
'The Grass Arena: An Autobiography' by John Healy.
Unfortunately, it's out of print, although I've seen it for sale second hand.
