They say you should be thinking of what kind of endgame is going to arise out of a given position. They also say that the king should be centralized in the endgame. Therefore, get him out there as soon as possible in the opening, planning for the endgame.

You learn more if you lose a game.
Try to lose so much you can in order to be better!

Drinking and playing fits together nicely.

Don't bother the stupid rules of e.p., castling, stale mate, and such. Taking the others king is all that matters.

When at all possible, you should choose to play with ornate, themed, non-standard pieces. Constantly having to remind yourself which piece is a bishop and which is a knight will keep you alert.

Also, don't ever play online correspondence chess. Its for patzers.

Study of the openings is the best way to improve because there is so much to cover and you have to be able to get out of the opening in order not to just get your butt kicked every time you play a master.

Never move a piece until you've moved all your pawns at least once.

A good chess player understands zugzwang. It is necessary to use this devastating weapon against your opponent if any progress is to be made. As white play 1. Nf3 and as black 1... Nf6 and no matter your opponent's next move respond by moving the knight back to its starting position. Repeat for your second move. In this way your opponent's position will lie in ruin while your pieces will still be nicely lined up poised to strike.

Lure all of your opponents pieces into attacking your queen in the opening by bringing her out on move 2 or 3.
