You guys probably figured this out but if you haven't then i'm back. After my 3 month leave from chess, I've come back to the game for certain reasons and plus I will be getting rid of cable tv very soon since Univ will start next month.
I will see what I can do about creating a Get to 1600 thread and posting some great resources for lower rated players.

Yes RahimK, welcome back!
Though people may want to take a break from chess, the chess bug eventually bites them again and they come back.
I still working on your getting to 1400 thread, but once I reach 1400, I'll be anxious to see your getting to 1600 thread.

I think you are full of b*******. You won't actually play chess.
If you don't play the only way your rating will get to 2000+ is if you use an engine.
If you have a magic formula don't you think someone would have found it before now?
The best way to get your rating up is to play quality games!
In Feb I made a thread about getting to 2000. That was my goal. I had just won a huge local tournament and got 150 point added to my otb rating. I was at 1852 and on my city's top 20 list. Check my blog, address is under my profile. Anways so I set my new goal to be 2000 and I wanted to get to that in 2 years. It took me less then 2 years to get to 1852 since playign OTB at our club.
Then I took my 3 month break and realized maybe I dont' want to get to 2000 anymore. Right now all I care about is teaching my student how to play better and having fun with chess again. Before I took chess way to seriously and I guess that made me tired of it and hence the 3 month break of watching tv. I was forcing myself to read for hours every day and then playing chess on top of that for 2 years.
Make sense?

Everything in moderation and you will get better.
Too much and you will get tired, confused and bored.
My OTB rating peaked at 2050, 20 years ago. I studied lots then, especially opening theory as it was usually small mistakes in the opening that slaughtered me. Most players from 1700+ have a reasonable grasp of tactics and strategy and can even force mate with B & N (if someone is rude enough to force them to prove it) but make small mistakes in the opening. Studying my favoured openings added 200 points to my rating over 2 years (i.e from 1850 to 2050) and I beat an IM (3 times) and drew with a WGM. I even studied 1. g4 at this time and it played a large part in getting my rating up even getting me one of those wins against the IM.
Then something happened that made me give up chess for 10 years.
Now I just like to have fun so play much too fast. Fast play late at night when tired and "drunk" has been responsible for all but 2 of my losses on this site.
So how to get from 1800 to 2000.
1. Study your favored openings to iron out those small errors and capitalise on them when your opponent gets it wrong;
2. Get a good nights sleep before the game;
3. Don't drink when playing;
4. Don't rush your moves against a weaker player. Consider everyone as being 2400+;
5. Don't play to have fun. Assume your life depends on every move;
6. No need to worry too much about end game theory. As long as you know the basics you can look up how to mate in 70 moves with K & 2N v K & P in the inevitable adjournment.
I'm not going to do that here. I don't care if my rating gets back to 2050 or not!
I will be pleased for any comments you have that can improve upon this.
