This is a highly strategic, yet tactical opening. It is semi-closed or very closed depending on how you play it. It doe'snt give black much space, and takes a lot of theory before you stop getting crushed in a few moves by a quick kingside assault.
If you like playing for a slow methodical fight, then this is your opening.
If you like open, attacking type games...try the sicillian, benko gambit, Alehkines defence, etc

If you are facing the Pirc as White, castle queenside and prepare for a massive knigside attack on your opponent. He will be doing the same, but on the queenside. If you can, trade off dark square bishops if he fianchettoes.
Pfff.....sounds dangerous. I love an opponent to play it that way with white. trust me, black will be quicker, especially of white tries to exchange the black square bishops. This will take a few moves and black can start attacking a lot faster than it looks. Agree that this strategy is dangerous.
Pirc has the danger that it LOOKS quite passive, but the reality is that black has good tactical possibilities.
I like the Pirc, preferably I play Alekhine, but due to the large amount of players playing Nc3 I use the Pirc as an alternative by playing d6 on my second move in that scenario.

I have been beaten by and beaten the Pirc, and have read mixed reviews of this (Modern) defence... is this a good defence for black?? Ideas..

I am not endorsing it! Just so you know...
